چکیده

Background: Split Spinal cord Malformation (SSCM) is a form of spinal dysraphism in which any or all of the spinal cord, cauda equina, and filum terminale are divided by a bony or fibrous spur. There are two described types of SSCM, namely Types I and II. In Type I SSCM, there are separate hemi-cords contained in two dural sacs, separated by a bony spur; in Type II SSCM, there is a single dural sac containing two hemi-cords separated by a fibrous band. Purpose: We present here a case presentation of an adult patient with Type I SSCM with tethered spinal cord. Also presented is a literature review on the embryogenesis, anatomy and imaging findings of SSCM. Conclusions: In untreated cases of diastematomyelia, neurological deficits are progressive in nature in both the adult and pediatric populations. Thus, many authors advocate early surgical intervention. Further studies are needed to evaluate the incidence of re-tethering after surgical treatment of SCCM.

Chiari malformation type I with cervicothoracic syringomyelia masquerading as bibrachial amyotrophy: a case report

INTRODUCTION Clinical presentation of syringomyelia can mimic a variety of neuromuscular disorders. A misdiagnosis can result in progressive pressure on the spinal cord, causing the development of severe irreversible neurologic deficits. CASE PRESENTATION We report the very unusual case of a 50-year-old Latino man who developed severe distal muscle atrophy and bulbar dysfunction as a result o...

Composite split cord malformation associated with a dermal sinus tract, dermoid cyst, and epidural abscess: A case report and review of literature

BACKGROUND Split cord malformation (SCM) is typically present at a single level but rarely, may be present at multiple levels in the spinal cord and can be associated with a wide array of lesions such as myelomeningoceles, lipomas, teratomas, and dermal sinus tracts (DSTs). CASE DESCRIPTION We describe a case of a 15-month-old female child who presented with high-grade fever and progressive m...

Split cord malformation type I distal to segmental myelomeningocele

The coexistence of myelomeningocele (MMC) and split cord malformation (SCM) is a well-known phenomenon. The SCM is usually above or at the level of the MMC. Split cord malformation distal to the MMC is considered to be the rarest form of such a combination. We report a case of SCM (type I) distal to the MMC diagnosed pre-operatively. Repair of the MMC and the SCM were carried out in the same se...

Thoracic spinal cord cavernous angioma: a case report and review of the literature

INTRODUCTION Cavernous angiomas of the spinal cord are rare vascular malformations, which account for approximately 5 to 12 percent of spinal cord vascular lesions. They usually originate in the vertebrae, with occasional extension into the extradural space, and intramedullary cavernomas, even if reported in the literature, are very rare. CASE PRESENTATION We report the case of a 34-year-old ...
